San Mateo (CA) Medical Center uses BeWell Mobile's asthma application to engage patients in self management outside the clinic.
Because the community clinics have limited resources, the program has turned to BeWell to effectively monitor the symptoms of young people with persistent or severe asthma. The application's electronic diary feature reports key data and is integrated and synchronized with the web portal. This enables RN case managers to intervene when appropriate, give advice, and support adherence through regimen reminders. The pilot was initially funded by the California HealthCare Foundation and has, since then, received funding from other sources.
Says Jonathan Mesinger, PhD, who directs the San Mateo Medical Center Fair Oaks Adult, Teen and Children’s Clinics: “BeWell has given us that critical link to the patient with a chronic disease. BeWell Mobile’s application allows our children to develop a sense of accomplishment because it acknowledges them as part of their own care. It is making a big difference for our patients.”

BeWell Mobile is supporting a five-year physical activity measurement study conducted by Barbara Sternfield, PhD, Senior Research Scientist, from Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research. The study is funded by the National Cancer Institute, a component of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
The first phase of the study is a pilot to evaluate electronic versus paper diaries with respect to the quality of the data obtained, the relative ease of use and the overall burden on study participants. BeWell Mobile's application allows participants to maintain physical activity diaries on the cellphone and to transmit the diaries wirelessly several times a day. It also automatically sends electronic messages to remind participants to keep up with the protocol.
Dr. Sternfeld commented, "I am very excited about the mobile phone application developed by BeWell Mobile for our study. In the process of developing this application, BeWell has been very responsive to our needs."
